  22. Yes the big three are somewhat difficult to do service bussiness with. 
  23. I have had a unpleasant experience also with one of the big three.  It 
  24. took SIX WEEKS to get an estimate for repair.  Either they are very   
  25. understaffed, or the radios break a lot.  Well since the big three are
  26. Japanese, perhaps one should consider American.  Ten-Tec makes some
  27. very good radio and have a very excellent repair department, which by
  28. the way the phone is answered by a person.  They will also help you fix
  29. your own radio, sending you the parts before you pay for them.  Seems 
  30. like they want a happy customer.

  41. The closest thing to TV GUIDE is a magazine called MONITORING
  42. TIMES published monthly. Available in most scanner/ham radio
  43. stores. I will post the address next week if someone doesn't
  44. beat me to it.

  74. I have just recently passed my Novice exams (and anxiously awaiting my ticket)
  75. and working on the Tech.  I have a friend who is selling his Heathkit SB102A
  76. radio.  I have some questions about it.
  77.  
  78. First:        Heathkit SB102A        (this guy built it himself)
  79.         with Power Supply
  80.         Speaker, clock, etc. (3 modules to make a console)
  81.         Noise Blanker
  82.         SWR
  83.         10 - 80 meter coverage.

  87. 1)    What is this worth?
  88. 2)    Is it worth buying?
  89. 3)    Any problems with these units that you can relate?

  106. Can anyone give me the specifications for a NEC UPC1651G?  I
  107. understand from the All Electronics catalog that it is a wideband RF
  108. amplifier, with 19dB gain and 1200MHz bandwidth.  I'd like to know the
  109. noise figure at HF and the 3rd order intercept (or the 1db compression
  110. point, or the maximum standing current, or some parameter from which I
  111. can estimate the signal handling capacity).  They are selling these
  112. things for $0.50 each or 100 for $35.00.  I'd like to know if they're
  113. some good before I buy them.

  123.      The subject of "mod's" for the IC-04AT have probably been brought  up
  124.    before here on the NET, but for some reason I have managed to miss them
  125.    all. So, if some kind ol radio amateur could dig in to his or her files
  126.    one more time, and post them for me, it would be muchly apprieciated. I
  127.    am specifically looking for the mod's that pertain to out of band oper-
  128.    ation, and RX audio volume improvement.

  143. Anyone got any comments (Good? Bad?) on the RS Discone antenna? I am needing
  144. a portable antenna for covering 86, 144-147 and 169-173MHz. Important thing
  145. is that it can be easily assembled & dismantled again. I dont have access to
  146. a lathe anymore, or I'd build myself a discone with quick-disconnect features.

  158. media who are monitoring on scanners of newsworthy events, such as big
  159. fires.

  179. Bob, you're quite right. Unless, of course, the crime has a victim or
  180. witness in the house who is willing to complain to the police. They
  181. would have to establish "probable cause" before a judge who could then
  182. issue a search and/or arrest warrant. Then, and only then, does the
  183. Constitution allow the police to break into a private home without the
  184. permission of the owner. This is long-established American law, and I
  185. wouldn't have it any other way.

  187. I live alone. If I listen to a forbidden frequency, who is going to
  188. know? How is the requirement for "probable cause" going to be satisfied?
  189. The fact is, it can't -- not unless you start loosening the standards
  190. for probable cause to the point where Constitutional guarantees lose all
  191. meaning.  The Fourth (and Fifth) Amendments are specifically intended to
  192. keep the government from conducting "fishing expeditions", but a fishing
  193. expedition is the only way you could enforce the ECPA against someone
  194. who violates it from the privacy of his own home.

  200. It's interesting that you should mention drugs. As time goes on, I am
  201. starting to lean more and more in the direction of those who say that
  202. the "war on drugs" (and the competition between the dealers) are greater
  203. threats to the country than the drugs themselves.

  205. I've occasionally tuned across the tabloid TV show "COPS". Judging from
  206. the show's ratings, the show depicts what most Americans probably
  207. perceive as a heroic group of fighters battling the evil drug menance.
  208. When I tune in, however, I often see highly questionable activities
  209. that, in my opinion, border on Gestapo tactics. Is it really necessary
  210. to severely penalize the use of drugs even when it's done in private? Do
  211. the ends always justify the means?
  212.  
  213. Apparently a lot of Americans think so. I turn pale when I read polls
  214. that show a majority willing to give up their Constitutional rights "if
  215. it will help the war on drugs".
  216.  
  217. Fortunately, unlike drugs, there has as yet been no hysterical public
  218. outcry against radio monitoring. If there were, I shudder to think of
  219. the consequences.
